French Gradual

Here are eight handsome pages from a 16th-century Gradual.   They are extremely well done, imo.

The pages --

i. Christ among the disciples, with illustionistic floral/vegetal border
xvii. Stoning of St. Stephen
xliiii v. Male saints
ci v. Confessors

ciii. Ecclesiastical procession (personal favorite)
clxxiiii v. Anne and Joachim at the Temple
cxxx v. Monk and Abbots
cxxxvi. Female saints

Comments

As always I appreciate when you go to the illuminated texts. Maybe I said this before, but part of why I love them so much is that I made the connection that the original illustrator for C.S. Lewis' Narnian tales, Pauline Baynes, was clearly influenced by illuminated texts. An artist friend once commented that my paintings from 1987 to around 1990 appeared to have that influence because of my use of borders. One of my English professors commented that some of my art work in the 1980s had a medieval look to it. Thank you so much for Something Beautiful (almost) every day.
