St Matthew

In the olden days, when the Internet was much less complete than it is now, the Indianapolis Museum of Art had only a few small, stingy images on its site.   Move forward a few years and that has changed for the better.

Here, for example, is St Matthew, ca. 1610, by El Greco.

A great place to find more works by this artist is at the Artcyclopedia

Josef Albers

I discovered Josef Albers in my early days on the Web. Today I discovered there is a foundation named after Albers and his wife Anni.    The foundation site has a gallery, and the gallery has an entire page devoted to a selection of Albers' squares.

Actually, as I look over the foundation's site, I see that it is very well-designed and appealing.

Lake Lucerne

How about another Albert Bierstadt? Here's another one from the Northeast -- Lake Lucerne, 1858.

Albert Bierstadt (1830-1902)

Albert Bierstadt at Artcyclopedia - lots of excellent paintings, mostly landscapes, mostly the American West.

Here's just one -- Mount Corcoran, ca. 1876.  If you use the MFAH's zoom feature, you'll see that this work is to die for.

William H. Johnson: Retrospective

The AAM portion of the Smithsonian site has quite a nice exhibition on African-American artist William H. Johnson

All fifty-three works presented are listed, complete with thumbnails, in the checklist section. (9 pages)

The exhibition's curator has identified six major themes.  Three of them are  --

But I feel a strong preference for the remaining, perhaps more personal, three --

Kawase Hasui

Kawase Hasui (1883-1957) is my favorite among the many excellent Japanese printmakers of the 19th and 20th centuries.   Here are two of his best works, imo --

  • Taishō Pond in Kamikōchi (color woodblock print).

  • Snow at Funabori, Edogawa, 1932 (color woodblock print).

  • Both are at the Los Angeles County Museum site, where many other Hasui prints can also be found.

    Della Robbia Family

It being Sunday, I offer for your enjoyment another of Luca della Robbia's marvelous terracotta sculptures -- Christ in Majesty, in Florence, Italy.

The same talented photographer has posted photographs of other works by members of the della Robbia family.

Luca (1400-1482) was the first and most famous member of this family of sculptors.   He was assisted and later succeeded by his nephew Andrea (1435-1525).   Andrea was in turn assisted and succeeded by his sons, the best known of whom was Giovanni (1469- ?).

    Fitz Henry Lane

Here's a painting that I have loved ever since I first discovered it through the Internet -- Becalmed off Halfway Rock, 1860, by American painter Fitz Henry Lane (1804-1865)

The National Gallery of Art, where "Becalmed off Halfway Rock, possesses two other works by Lane --

You can find numerous other fine paintings by this artist by consulting Fitz Hugh Lane Online

    Cézanne's Apples

The Metropolitan Museum of Art site has a good feature on the work of Post-Impressionist Paul Cézanne, Cézanne's Apples.   Take a look.  It's short and quite painless.   :-)
