SDMA: An Imaginary Gathering of Sages: "An Imaginary Gathering of Sages 1990:353 around 1640, North India, "
"This, then, is an imaginary gathering of philosophers, from different ages, who shared similar beliefs. The painting was probably made for a member of the royal family who followed their teachings. "
"The inscription on the book held by the figure at the lower right identifies Muhammad Daulat as the painter and reveals that his father was La'l. Daulat signs his name elsewhere as khanzada, or 'of the palace born', meaning that his father was in the employ of the emperor, but until this inscription was read his lineage was unknown to us. A prolific painter, La'l was one of the leading artists of Akbar's karkhana, or artists' workshop. "
"The men in the main picture are Muslim scholars, all involved with the written word. They are shown in discussion, books kept near for quick reference. "
"The man at the upper left, hand extended, is Qutb al-Din Bakhtiyar Kaki, a celebrated Muslim saint of Delhi who died in 1235. The older man across from him is Shaikh Husain. Both have been identified from inscribed paintings
"but the rest have so far not been identified. "
"At the upper and lower borders three calligraphers work with their books and pens. Calligraphy was considered to be the highest form of art, above painting and gilding. "
Unlike the others, the two men at the lower corners wear garments like those worn in the seventeenth century when the painting was made. "

Brothel Scene: "A genre painting always presents a situation, which, through the introduction of key symbols, is reversed into a moral example.
This is examplified by the "Brothel Scene", which shows an interior with a rather coy lady pouring a smartly dressed young man a glass of wine. An elegant scene - until one perceives, farther back in the room, two dogs copulating. "
