I've written about the recent unpleasantness in my life, in which I have been accused of being a "problem" in the use of a resource which has been very valuable, and quite essential, to me.
Here is a letter I wrote last night, before the issue had been decided finally against me:
You allege that I am a "problem" of some kind. You allege this despite my great willingness and ability to cooperate, and despite my very many and very obvious contributions to my colleagues.
My response to all [of this] is very simple: give me a policy -- one that applies to everyone-- and I will follow it. I am a great believer in quiet and order, but I also believe in fairness. A policy that is created after the fact is not fair. A policy that applies only to one person is egregiously unfair. It smacks, in fact, of a deliberate wish to humiliate.
I will follow any policy that applies to everyone, and follow it to the letter. I will not be called to the principal's office so that humiliating conditions can be applied to me, and to me alone.
