More than thirty years ago I came across a book by Joshua Loth Liebman, a rather eminent rabbi. Near the end of the book he has a section called "Give Us Heroes." What he said in that section made an impression on me that has lasted to this day. It's so good, in fact, that I might try to quote all of it later on.
Liebman quotes a Professor Jaeger to this effect:
"The most effective guidance in personal difficulty is given by the lives of model heroes of old . . . ."And then he makes this comment for himself:
. . . the educational process of Judaism depended largely upon vividly presenting to the growing minds of each new generation the deeds and the qualities of great human personalities which might serve as models for imitation.
