I'd never heard of the American artist Fitz Henry Lane (1804-1865) before I arrived on the Internet about 12 years ago, but I fell in love with his work right away and have remained under his spell. The National Gallery in Washington, D.C., owns three of his works, at least of them masterpieces.
My longtime favorite is Becalmed off Halfway Rock, which Lane did in 1860.
The Artcyclopedia site has its usual excellent list of museums which hold other Lane works.
Wow, those paintings really are beautiful. Thanks so much for sharing! I just now stumbled across your site, and I just love this idea of sharing beauty. I'll definitely be back.

Jennifer, thank you very much for your affirming words. It's a pleasure to meet you. I'll have to redouble my effort to post more regularly! :-)

It is a shame to admit that this artist was unknown to me. Very interesting, I'll definately check up more about him. Thank you for posting this Keara! :)

Benta, this artist is simply not very well-known. If it weren't for the hours I have obsessively logged on the Internet, he would be unknown to me too. ;-)
